Design is often associated with the creation of functional objects that address immediate problems. However, an overemphasis on short-term solutions can confine us to conventional thinking, making it difficult to recognize what truly matters or to tackle issues at their root. In contrast, critical design offers an alternative approach. Rather than seeking to solve problems directly, it employs designed objects as tools for reflection—raising questions, challenging assumptions, and stimulating public discourse. A subset of this practice, speculative design—sometimes called future design—proposes alternative possibilities that lie beyond current expectations.
